New Leadership Elected for the
BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres
Shuswap Territory / Kamloops, BC – The BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres (BCAAFC) is pleased to announce that a new Executive Committee to their Board of Directors was elected on July 9th, 2011, at the 39th Annual General Meeting held in Kamloops, BC. The six (6) Executive Committee positions are elected annually and members now include:
President - Annette Morgan, Dze L K’ant Friendship Centre Society
1st Vice President - Barb Ward-Burkitt, Prince George Native Friendship Centre
2nd Vice President - Richard Samuel, Port Alberni Friendship Centre
Treasurer - Christopher Phillips, Interior Indian Friendship Society
Secretary - Laura Hockman, First Nations Friendship Centre
Youth Representative - Rikki Wylie, Tillicum Lelum Aboriginal Friendship Centre
Debbie Williams, Executive Director of the Hiiye’yu Lelum House of Friendship Association in Duncan, BC was also elected as the Representative to the National Association of Friendship Centres Board of Directors, an ex-officio position to the BCAAFC Executive Committee.
This will be Annette Morgan’s first term as President of the BCAAFC, however she brings with her eighteen years of experience with the Friendship Centre in Smithers, BC and the last ten of which have been as the Executive Director. Ms. Morgan’s hands-on approach to community involvement leads her to interact with many groups, funders and committees to ensure the community’s needs are met and the most appropriate services are provided. She brings to the Executive Committee a wealth of experience, cultural knowledge and strong leadership skills.
The BCAAFC would also like to recognize past President, Grace Elliott Nielsen, for her long standing commitment and contributions as former President of the BCAAFC. Ms. Nielsen volunteered as President for the past 12 years consecutively and her work and leadership has helped grow the Friendship Centre movement in BC.
“Each member brings unique experiences and perspectives to the Executive Committee, all of which will be needed to guide the BCAAFC in moving into the implementation of our long term strategic plan.” states Paul Lacerte, Executive Director of BCAAFC. “We are experiencing a time of change and growth and we are looking forward to the next year.”
Friendship Centres provide a multitude of vital social services, as well as social and cultural gathering places for Aboriginal people residing in BC’s towns and cities.
